What is a GCSE in electronics?

A GCSE in electronics is one of the key stage 4 science subjects that meets some elements of the science programme of study.

GCSE electronics should:

  • provide, through well-designed studies of experimental and practical electronics, a worthwhile educational experience for all, whether or not students are intending to study electronics beyond GCSE level
  • encourage sufficient knowledge and understanding to prepare students for studies beyond the GCSE in electronics and/or in electronics-dependent vocational courses in applied science
  • encourage students to appreciate that the applications of electronics may be both beneficial and detrimental to the individual, the community and the environment
  • encourage the acquisition of a body of knowledge of solving practical/technological problems through processes of analysis, synthesis and realisation
  • stimulate the development of curiosity, interest and enjoyment of electronics.
